Move-in checklist

From application to keys — a clear list so nothing important slips through the cracks.

Get paperwork ready

  • Government ID and proof of income (pay stubs or offer letter)
  • Recent rental history and landlord references if requested
  • Funds for application fees and the full move-in amount
  • List of questions about lease length, renewals, and guest policies

During the tour & lease review

  • Test water pressure, outlets, windows, locks, and HVAC if possible
  • Photograph existing damage before you move in
  • Confirm what is included (appliances, parking, storage)
  • Read the lease for fees, early termination, and repair responsibilities
  • Ask how maintenance requests are submitted

One week before move-in

  • Transfer or set up electricity, gas, water, and internet
  • Buy or renew renter’s insurance if required
  • Schedule movers or reserve a truck
  • Update your mailing address where needed
  • Confirm key pickup time and parking for move day

First 48 hours in the home

  • Complete the move-in condition form and keep a copy
  • Locate smoke/CO detectors and emergency exits
  • Note trash/recycling days and building rules
  • Meet neighbors or on-site staff if available
  • Set up a calendar reminder for rent due dates
